Activists of the Karnataka Prantha Raitha Sangha (KPRS) staged a protest outside the Gulbarga Electricity Supply Company Limited (GESCOM) in Kalaburagi on Tuesday, demanding that the Karnataka Electricity Regulatory Commission (KERC) circular be withdrawn. The circular, which the KPRS believes is meant to bring farm pumpsets under the ambit of Direct Benefit Transfer, requires Aadhaar linkage to irrigation pumpsets of under 10 horsepower within six months. Sharanabasappa Mamshetty, the KPRS district president, criticised the measure and claimed it would make life harder for farmers. The protestors also opposed a raise in power tariffs and the replacement of a multi-slab system with a two-slab system. After the protest, KPRS leaders submitted a memorandum to the office of GESCOM Managing Director addressed to Chief Minister Siddaramaiah.
