Kolkata Police Arrest Two Students in Connection with Fatal Campus Ragging Incident

In a tragic incident at Jadavpur University, the Kolkata Police have arrested two students for their involvement in the death of a first-year student, Swapnodeep Kundu. The victim was allegedly ragged and mentally harassed by these two students, identified as Deepsekhar Dutta, 19, and Manotosh Ghosh, 20. The prime accused, Sourav Chowdhury, a former student of the university, has already been arrested.

According to sources, Deepsekhar and Manotosh were present at the scene when the ragging incident took place. They acted under the instructions of Sourav Chowdhury, mentally tormenting Swapnodeep Kundu. The police investigated the matter and found sufficient evidence to establish their direct involvement in the alleged ragging. Consequently, the police placed both suspects under arrest.

Deepsekhar is a second-year student in the Economics department, while Ghosh studies Sociology at Jadavpur University. Both of them reside in the main hostel, where the unfortunate incident occurred. Swapnodeep Kundu fell from the second floor of the building and succumbed to his injuries. His body was discovered naked after the fall. It is reported that before his untimely demise, he repeatedly stated, I am not gay.

Earlier, the police arrested Sourav Chowdhury, who later confessed to his involvement in the ragging incident that led to this tragedy. Acting upon his statement, the police summoned 12 additional students and residents of the hostel for questioning. The 12 individuals were interrogated throughout the night to ascertain their roles in the incident.

It is crucial to address incidents like ragging in educational institutions as they pose a serious threat to the well-being and mental health of students. Educational institutions must take strict measures to prevent such incidents and ensure the safety of their students.

The Kolkata Police’s prompt action in arresting the involved students demonstrates their commitment to maintaining law and order within the city. The investigation is ongoing, and the police will continue to gather evidence to hold individuals accountable for their actions.

This unsettling incident at Jadavpur University serves as a reminder that ragging can lead to tragic consequences. It is vital for everyone involved in the education system, including students, faculty, and administrators, to work together to create an environment that fosters learning, compassion, and respect.

The loss of a young life is a sobering reminder of the importance of addressing the issue of ragging promptly and effectively. It is our collective responsibility to ensure that educational institutions provide a safe and nurturing environment for students to thrive and reach their full potential.

The Kolkata Police’s efforts to bring justice for Swapnodeep Kundu and his grieving family should serve as a wake-up call for all educational institutions to eradicate ragging and promote a culture of empathy and inclusion. Let this incident be a catalyst for change, urging universities and colleges across the nation to implement stringent measures to prevent such tragic incidents from recurring.
