Entrepreneurs in Israel are reviving the historically significant kibbutzim, repurposing the once-thriving agricultural communities into hubs for creative and high-tech industries. Kibbutzim, which were communal living and agricultural communities, were crucial to Israeli society in the 20th century. However, the economic crisis in Israel in the 1980s led to many kibbutzim falling into debt, and young people leaving in search of city life. The Kibbutz Industry Association’s head, Gil Lin, notes that kibbutzim were the first startups and continue to innovate. Despite the shift towards new industries, kibbutzim remain significant agricultural contributors, accounting for 40% of Israel’s agricultural output.
