The Congress president, Mallikarjun Kharge, had expressed his dissatisfaction with the government’s decision to change the name of the Nehru Museum. He accused the ruling party of trying to erase the history of Nehru, who had contributed significantly to modern India and democracy.
In a tweet, Kharge said that those who don’t have a history of their own are attempting to wipe out the history of others. The renaming of the Nehru Memorial Museum and Library is an ill-fated attempt to belittle Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru’s personality. He was the fearless watchdog of democracy and architect of modern India.
Kharge further said that the BJP-RSS had a dictatorial attitude, and their dwarf thinking could not diminish Nehru’s enormous contribution, Jawahar of Hind, to India.
The decision to rename the museum was made at a special meeting of the NMML Society on Thursday, presided over by the Defence Minister, Rajnath Singh. The NMML Society has Prime Minister Narendra Modi as its chairman and 29 members, including Union Ministers Amit Shah, Nirmala Sitharaman, Dharmendra Pradhan, G Kishan Reddy, Anurag Thakur.
The museum was inaugurated last year in April at the Teen Murti complex, which served as the official residence of country’s first Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru from 1948 till his death in 1964.
In conclusion, Kharge’s response to the renaming of the Nehru Museum is another indication of the ongoing political tensions in India. The opposition parties are concerned that by renaming the Nehru museum, the government is trying to erase the Nehruvian legacy. This decision, which is viewed by many as a political move, may weaken the government’s position among the people.
