England scored 124 runs in the first session at over 4.5 runs per over but lost three crucial wickets. Australia’s surprise decision to drop attacking bowler Mitchell Starc in favor of Josh Hazlewood added to their defensive approach. Pietersen, on commentary duty for the official broadcasters, commented that it was fantastic to see Australia so defensive from an English perspective and added that the rotation of strike made the game feel very short-form-like. Despite the docile nature of the pitch, Australia picked three wickets, including that of Zak Crawley who got out for 61 in the final delivery of the first session.
