Schools in Kerala, India are observing dry day as a measure to control the spread of infectious diseases including fevers caused by mosquito vectors. On Friday, the education department in Kerala observed the dry day campaign across the state, with the aim of preventing mosquito-breeding. Students participated in cleaning classrooms and school campuses to destroy sources of mosquito breeding and prevent the spread of infection. The cleanliness drive involved the participation of NSS, NCC, and student police cadets. The campaign, which also involves offices and houses, aims to prevent mosquito breeding for the next few weeks.

The Kerala Minister for Public Education, V Sivankutty, inaugurated the dry day campaign, stating that continuous cleaning would help contain the spread of bacteria and reduce the chances of infection among students and staff. The minister emphasized that an active participation of students in the cleaning of their surroundings would create responsibility and respect towards the environment. The ministry adopted the slogan clean campus, green campus and highlighted the importance of waste management, recycling and protection of the environment in school campuses.

Sivankutty further stated that health assemblies would be conducted in all schools across the state, and emphasized that cleaning should start from classrooms. All students have to be part of it. Clean and well-maintained school campuses create a good impression among parents and visitors, attract more students and create a healthy culture in students.

The dry day campaign is a timely intervention to curb the spread of infectious diseases in schools, offices, and households during the monsoon season in Kerala. The campaign emphasizes the importance of sustainable cleaning practices, waste management, and recycling, which can contribute to a healthier and greener environment. This campaign has gained significant traction and is anticipated to have a positive impact on public health.
