Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan is set to embark on an eight-day visit to the US and Cuba, much to the dismay of opposition parties Congress and BJP, who argue that Kerala cannot afford such expenses during its current financial crisis. Vijayan’s trip recently came under scrutiny, with reports circulating that those who wish to dine with him in New York will have to pay at least $50,000. Despite the controversy, the Vice-chairman of Norka, a state agency for the diaspora, reassured the public that everything is in order for the impending diaspora meet in New York, which is set to last three days. After the meet, Vijayan will travel to Cuba for a few days, before returning to Kerala. The opposition parties remain disgruntled, fearful that their state will bear the financial burden of the trip, which many consider to be unnecessary during Kerala’s tough financial times.
