Kelvin Kiptum: the Kenyan runner who redefined what it takes to win marathons

Kenyan athletics has been struck with a devastating loss as the world mourns the death of Kelvin Kiptum, the marathon world record holder who was on track to become the first person to run the race in under two hours. Tragically, Kiptum, at the age of only 24, was killed in a car accident on February 10 along with his coach Gervais Hakizimana, 37, from Rwanda.

The accident occurred near one of the high-altitude athletics training centers in Kenya’s north Rift Valley, a region renowned for producing world-class distance runners. It is home to some of the biggest names in the sport, including former world marathon record holder Eliud Kipchoge.

Kiptum’s journey to the top of marathon running was nothing short of remarkable. Six years ago, he couldn’t even afford a pair of shoes for his first major competitive race. Yet, at the time of his untimely death, he had established himself as one of the greatest marathon runners the world had ever seen.

His tragic passing has sparked shock and admiration worldwide, as he was poised to carry on the rich tradition of dominant distance runners from Kenya. In the words of Kenyan president William Ruto, Kiptum was our future.

As a sport scientist with a keen interest in Kenyan athletics, I closely followed Kiptum’s dazzling rise to become a global sensation. His rapid ascension to the top spot in distance running showcased his immense talent and also shed light on the values and training methods he embodied.

Kiptum was born and raised in an environment where dedication to distance running has transformed numerous barefoot, livestock-herding children into international superstars. His fearless front-running style set him apart from his peers, displaying a level of confidence and control that allowed him to dictate the pace rather than respond to others’ moves. We are left to ponder the untapped potential he possessed and how much farther the limits of marathon running could be pushed.

Kiptum’s performances on the world stage were nothing short of iconic. In only his third appearance in an elite marathon, he shattered the world record with a time of 2 hours and 35 seconds at the Chicago Marathon last year. This record was officially ratified by the international track federation World Athletics on February 6. Prior to his record-breaking feat, he had already clinched victory at the 2023 London Marathon (2:01:25) and the 2022 Valencia Marathon (2:01:53), marking his debut in the event.

At the time of his tragic passing, Kiptum was in training for the Rotterdam Marathon in April 2024. The anticipation for his attempt to break the elusive two-hour barrier in an official race was building, with the world eagerly awaiting his historic endeavor.

In addition, he was a top contender for a gold medal at the 2024 Olympics in Paris scheduled for July. Kiptum was expected to face off against the likes of Kipchoge, as both athletes had been named in Kenya’s provisional marathon team.

Kiptum’s journey in athletics exemplifies the way Kenyan distance running traditions are passed down through generations. Inspired by his cousin, who often served as a pacemaker for Ethiopian legend Haile Gebrselassie, Kiptum developed a passion for running. However, his father believed he should pursue a more practical career as an electrician. Despite initial setbacks, Kiptum’s perseverance eventually paid off.

It can be speculated that Kiptum’s decision to continue training without immediate rewards ultimately prepared him for the marathon. This grueling event, spanning a distance of 42.195 kilometers, demands unparalleled endurance both physically and mentally.

While many elite Kenyan marathon runners, including Paul Tergat, Kipchoge, and Moses Tanui, transitioned to the marathon after successful careers on the track, Kiptum embraced the marathon early on and made it his sole focus. His dedication and commitment to the event were truly remarkable.

As the world mourns the loss of Kelvin Kiptum, the future he could have shaped becomes less relevant than the legacy he leaves behind. This young athlete defied expectations and pushed the boundaries of human potential in the marathon. He was a shining example of the spirit and talent that define Kenya’s renowned distance running pedigree.

In his honor, we reflect on the impact he had in such a short time and the inspiration he provided to athletes around the globe. Kelvin Kiptum will forever be remembered as a true legend of marathon running, and his legacy will continue to inspire generations to come.
