The Kerala Catholic Bishops’ Council (KCBC) has called for the resignation of Manipur Chief Minister Biren Singh over his failure to address the ongoing riots in the state. KCBC accused Singh of neglecting his responsibility to quell the violence, which has been ongoing for months.
In a statement, KCBC spokesperson Fr. Jacob Palackappilly stated that proactive action must be taken against the rioters who have insulted Indian women on a global scale. He criticized Singh for claiming that there are hundreds of similar cases, calling it an insult to politicians. KCBC asserted that the central government, tasked with safeguarding the dignity of Indian women, must end its inaction and fulfill its responsibility.
Furthermore, KCBC expressed hope in the united condemnation of the riots by all those who believe in democracy. They stressed the urgent need for the government to intervene and restore peace, as the situation in Manipur is tarnishing the country’s reputation.
Addressing the matter, Bishop Paul Antony Mullassery, chairman of the KCBC family commission, deemed the developments in Manipur a stain on the nation. He strongly criticized the inaction and apathy of those in power, asserting that immediate intervention is necessary.
The Mathruvedi of the Syro Malabar Church also condemned the incidents in Manipur, where women were subjected to public humiliation, nudity, and gang rape. They denounced the continued inaction of those in power and called for nationwide protests against such cruelty.
In light of the escalating situation, KCBC stressed the responsibility of the elected government to maintain law and order. They urged the central and state governments to demonstrate effective action rather than relying on the judiciary to intervene.
