The Kansas City Chiefs have finalized their 53-man roster ahead of the NFL’s deadline, with a few surprises and cuts revealed. Quarterback Shane Buechele and running back La’Mical Perine were among the unexpected cuts, despite impressing with their performances during the preseason. On the other hand, undrafted rookie Cam Jones managed to secure a spot on the roster, adding depth to the linebacker position.

The Chiefs also made the decision to waive defensive end Joshua Kaindoh, who was selected in the fourth round of the 2021 draft, and offensive lineman Darian Kinnard, a fifth-round pick from last season. It’s worth noting that the roster is not entirely settled yet, as there is still the possibility of adding players via waivers. Additionally, the team could bring back some of their previously released players if they choose to place anyone on injured reserve.

Following the clearing of waivers on Wednesday, the Chiefs will be able to assemble their 16-man practice squad, potentially bringing back familiar faces to the team. It’s important to highlight that defensive lineman Chris Jones has been placed on the NFL’s reserve/did not report list. Jones, who has been holding out of training camp in hopes of securing a long-term deal, currently does not count against the Chiefs’ 53-man limit.

Here is a breakdown of the Chiefs’ initial roster and the number of players retained at each position:

Quarterbacks: Patrick Mahomes, Blaine Gabbert
Running Backs: Clyde Edwards-Helaire, Isiah Pacheco, Jerick McKinnon
Wide Receivers: Marquez Valdes-Scantling, Skyy Moore, Kadarius Toney, Rashee Rice, Richie James, Justin Watson, Justyn Ross
Tight Ends: Travis Kelce, Noah Gray, Blake Bell
Offensive Linemen: Donovan Smith, Joe Thuney, Creed Humphrey, Trey Smith, Jawaan Taylor, Prince Tega Wanogho, Wanya Morris, Nick Allegretti, Mike Caliendo, Lucas Niang
Defensive Linemen: George Karlaftis, Derrick Nnadi, Keondre Coburn, Turk Wharton, Malik Herring, Mike Danna, Felix Anudike-Uzomah, Matt Dickerson, BJ Thompson, Neil Farrell Jr.
Linebackers: Nick Bolton, Willie Gay, Leo Chenal, Drue Tranquill, Jack Cochrane, Cam Jones
Cornerbacks: L’Jarius Sneed, Trent McDuffie, Joshua Williams, Jaylen Watson, Nic Jones
Safeties: Justin Reid, Bryan Cook, Mike Edwards, Chamarri Conner
Special Teams: Harrison Butker, Tommy Townsend, James Winchester

Please note that defensive end Charles Omenihu is not on the initial 53-man roster due to a six-game suspension at the start of the season. The placement of defensive lineman Chris Jones on the reserve/did not report list also exempts him from the roster count.

These decisions reflect the Chiefs’ choices as they prepare for the upcoming season. There is anticipation for what lies ahead as the team weighs their options for potential additions and works towards finalizing their practice squad. Fans will be eagerly waiting to see how this refined roster performs when the season kicks off.
