Trade Analyst Backs Javed Akhtar in Kangana Ranaut Defamation Case

Renowned trade analyst, Komal Nahta, appeared before the Andheri Magistrate Court as a witness in the ongoing defamation case filed by veteran lyricist and poet Javed Akhtar against actress Kangana Ranaut. In her 2020 interview, Ranaut alleged that Akhtar had threatened her during a meeting held in March 2016. She claimed that Akhtar had advised her against washing her dirty linen in public during her feud with actor Hrithik Roshan.

Nahta, who has been working as a film trade analyst for over 35 years, spoke in defense of Akhtar during his testimonial. He stated that after watching Ranaut’s televised interview, he was shocked and could not believe that Akhtar would speak to her in such a manner. Nahta received numerous calls from concerned family and friends, questioning his friendship with Akhtar, which distressed him greatly.

When asked if he personally spoke to Akhtar regarding the interview, Nahta confirmed that he did. According to Nahta, Akhtar denied making the statements attributed to him by Ranaut in the interview, asserting that they were false. Nahta further emphasized that he has never witnessed Akhtar speaking disrespectfully to anyone, particularly women. Even if Akhtar makes remarks about individuals, they are always laced with humor and devoid of abusive language.

Nahta, who is known for his close ties and interviews with various personalities in the film industry, attested to his acquaintance with Akhtar.

Meanwhile, the lawyer representing Akhtar, Jay Bharadwaj, questioned Nahta about his connection to the lyricist. Nahta clarified that he has personally interviewed Akhtar and has been well acquainted with him.

Despite Nahta’s defense of Akhtar, the trade analyst revealed that his friendship with Akhtar had been doubted by several members of his friend circle after Ranaut’s interview. According to Nahta, Akhtar’s image suffered from the allegations made by Ranaut.

Ranaut’s lawyer, Rizwan Siddiquee, was absent during Nahta’s appearance in court. The actress’s lawyer will cross-examine Nahta on July 24.

It is worth noting that this defamation case has garnered significant attention from the public and media, given the prominence of both the involved parties. As the trial continues, it remains to be seen how the court will ultimately decide on the matter.
