Mid-Size SUV Sales June 2023: XUV700, Hector, Harrier, Safari, Alcazar, and More

In June 2023, mid-size SUV sales saw a YoY growth of 7.36%, reaching a total of 25,925 units. However, there was a slight decline of 6.57% in comparison to the previous month. Among the various brands in this segment, Mahindra emerged as the frontrunner, with its Scorpio lineup and XUV700 dominating the sales charts.

The Mahindra Scorpio lineup, comprising the Scorpio N and Scorpio Classic, secured the top position with a total of 8,648 units sold. This represented a 9.69% YoY growth, translating to 764 more units compared to the same period last year. However, there was a 7.19% decline in MoM sales, resulting in a loss of 670 units.

The Scorpio N and Scorpio Classic together accounted for a substantial 33.36% market share in the mid-size SUV segment. The XUV700, on the other hand, recorded sales of 5,391 units. Although it experienced a 10.48% YoY decline, there was a positive MoM growth of 2.78%, with an additional 146 units sold.

A noteworthy new entrant in this space was the Toyota Innova Hycross, which secured the third position with impressive sales of 3,275 units. Hycross demonstrated a strong MoM growth of 9.53%. On the other hand, the combined sales of the Hector and Hector Plus stood at 2,170 units, representing a YoY decline of 9.66% and a significant MoM decline of 22.50%.

The Hyundai Alcazar secured the fifth spot, selling 2,119 units in June. Although Hyundai experienced a YoY growth of 6.70% for the Alcazar, there was a substantial MoM decline of 13.26%. Tata’s Harrier and Safari, once leaders in this segment, are preparing to make a comeback in their facelifted versions. Combined, the mid-size SUV sales for Tata stood at 3,703 units, with the Harrier contributing 2,040 units and the Safari accounting for 1,663 units. Harrier witnessed a YoY decline of 32.34% and a MoM decline of 11.42%, while Safari registered an 11.02% YoY decline and a 6.36% MoM decline.

Moving to the premium end of this space, the Hyundai Tucson emerged as the highest-selling vehicle, with sales of 263 units. However, it experienced a 30.61% MoM decline. The Jeep Compass reported lower numbers than the Tucson, selling 211 units in June. This represented a substantial 76.35% YoY decline and a 33.23% MoM decline.

The Volkswagen Tiguan secured sales of 133 units, indicating a YoY growth of 121.67% but a MoM decline of 22.22%. Lastly, the Citroen C5 Aircross saw sales of 12 units, with a YoY decline of 29.41% but a significant MoM growth of 100%.

Overall, the mid-size SUV segment witnessed a growth of 7.36% MoM, with an increase of 1,778 units. However, there was a decline of 6.57% MoM, resulting in a loss of 1,822 units. As the market continues to evolve, it will be interesting to see how these brands fare in the coming months.
