Joshua Dobbs Selected as Browns’ Backup Quarterback, Bolstering QB Room Strength

On the final day of Browns training camp, head coach Kevin Stefanski officially named Joshua Dobbs as the backup quarterback behind Deshaun Watson. This decision was widely anticipated, solidifying the Browns’ quarterback room and adding depth to the team’s roster. Dobbs’ inclusion means that Dorian Thompson-Robinson, the impressive fifth-round pick from UCLA, will assume the role of the third quarterback.

Stefanski expressed his enthusiasm for the quarterback room as a whole, highlighting the importance of finding the right fit. He emphasized the value of having a group of players who challenge, support, and push each other, ultimately fostering growth and development. Stefanski emphasized his contentment with the dynamic within the room, signaling a positive environment for both competition and camaraderie.

Coinciding with Dobbs’ promotion, the Browns decided to waive quarterback Kellen Mond, who joined the team last season. Although Stefanski had high regard for Mond’s talent and acknowledged his improvement during the past year, choosing Dobbs as the backup quarterback was deemed the right move. However, Stefanski expects Mond to find a new opportunity promptly in the league and bounce back from this setback.

The Browns’ quarterback room is structured in a way that not only provides Watson with two outstanding backup options who possess overlapping skill sets but also surrounds him with longtime friends who will provide unwavering support. Watson has known Dobbs since their high school days in Atlanta, where they trained together under QB coach Quincy Avery. Thompson-Robinson, on the other hand, has been acquainted with Watson since their time at UCLA, nurturing a sense of camaraderie and rapport among the trio.

In terms of performance, Thompson-Robinson showcased impressive skills throughout the preseason, completing 30 of his 46 passes for 348 yards, with two touchdowns and no interceptions, earning him a remarkable 102.5 rating. Comparatively, Dobbs had a more limited opportunity to showcase his abilities, managing 8 completions out of 16 attempts for 77 yards, with no touchdowns and one interception, resulting in a rating of 37.8. Dobbs is expected to take the field in the Browns’ upcoming game against the Kansas City Chiefs on Saturday afternoon.

Overall, the Browns’ decision to name Joshua Dobbs as the backup quarterback highlights the team’s commitment to building a strong and supportive quarterback room. With the combination of Dobbs’ experience and rapport with Watson, along with Thompson-Robinson’s promising potential, the Browns possess a formidable quarterback lineup that will undoubtedly contribute to their success in the upcoming season.
