Joe Root has taken over the top spot in the latest ICC Test ranking, replacing Marnus Labuschagne, after his impressive performance in the 1st Ashes Test against Australia. Labuschagne slipped to third place, while New Zealand’s Kane Williamson climbed up to second place. Former India captain Virat Kohli continued to slide down the ranking, falling to the 14th position. Rishabh Pant is the only Indian batter in the top 10 while Rohit Sharma retains the 12th position.
Meanwhile, Pakistan captain Babar Azam remains in the 5th position in the Test ranking. Ravichandran Ashwin, the Indian bowler, still holds the number one spot with 860 points, while England’s James Anderson took the second position with 829 points.
England bowlers Ollie Robinson and Stuart Broad climbed one place each inside the top 10, while Moeen Ali returned to the rankings in the 52nd spot for his first Test in almost two years against Australia.
This major shakeup at the top of the batter ranking came after Root’s terrific scores of 118 not out and 46 against Australia in the first Ashes Test in Birmingham, which saw him rise five places to regain his place as the No.1 ranked Test batter in the world. Australians Travis Head and Steve Smith also lost ground in the battle to become the No. 1 Test batter. With just 26 rating points now separating the top six players, it is one of the closest battles seen in recent times.
