The National Health Mission (NHM) in India’s state of Jharkhand is taking steps to make the region ‘Tobacco Free Youth’. Jharkhand is the first state in the country to embark on the initiative. The Mission Director, Dr Bhuvnesh Pratap Singh, launched a two-day state-level training workshop on Thursday where he called on all relevant authorities to exercise their power in working towards this objective. The comprehensive guidelines for implementation were discussed, particularly regarding an awareness campaign on the impact of using tobacco, the implementation of the Tobacco Control Act, and penalties for violations of the COTPA 2003 regulations. In a bid to ensure compliance, the mission director urged officials to take action against violators in their respective jurisdictions. The operation was launched from the state’s IPH Conference Hall in Ranchi.
