Two Teen Girls Arrested After Jewish Woman Attacked and Robbed in ‘Possible Hate Crime’
A 20-year-old Jewish woman was assaulted and robbed in what authorities are investigating as a possible hate crime. The incident occurred on Thursday (December 7) at around 4.30pm when the victim was approached by two girls on Rostrevor Avenue in Tottenham. The suspects violently attacked the woman and stole her handbag, leaving her with bruising and in a state of shock. Although she did not require hospitalization, the victim was left shaken by the ordeal.
Detectives reviewed CCTV footage which indicated that the suspects were wearing school uniforms. Working closely with school officers from neighboring boroughs, the investigators were able to identify the two girls. On Saturday (December 9), the police went to an address in Haringey and arrested a 13-year-old and a 14-year-old girl on suspicion of robbery. Both suspects remain in custody as the investigation continues.
Detective Sergeant Asli Benson, leading the investigation, expressed concern about the incident and affirmed their commitment to supporting the victim. She stated, This was a terrifying incident for the young woman who was attacked. We will continue to ensure she has the right support. DS Benson praised the progress made in the case, adding, Officers have been pursuing all available lines of enquiry since the incident and these arrests are a very positive development.
The victim is a member of the orthodox Jewish community, and authorities believe she may have been targeted due to her religious identity. DS Benson acknowledged the heightened concerns within the Jewish community, particularly in light of recent terror attacks in Israel and the subsequent rise in antisemitic hate crimes in London. She stressed, While we are keeping an open mind as to the motive behind the incident and will continue to explore all avenues, we are treating this as a possible hate crime.
The police are appealing to the public for any information or potential witnesses to come forward. Individuals with relevant information are encouraged to call the police on 101, quoting reference CAD 5505/07Dec. The incident has reignited discussions surrounding the need to address and combat hate crimes, particularly those motivated by religious discrimination. Authorities are determined to bring the perpetrators to justice and foster a safe and inclusive environment for all communities.
