69-Year-Old Jewish Man Dies After Altercation at Israel-Hamas Protest in California

A 69-year-old Jewish man tragically lost his life after sustaining a blunt-force head injury during an altercation at an Israel-Hamas war protest in Thousand Oaks, California, according to Ventura County officials. The Ventura County Sheriff’s Office reported that the incident occurred at the intersection of Westlake Boulevard and Thousand Oaks Boulevard, where simultaneous pro-Israeli and pro-Palestinian demonstrations were taking place over the weekend.

The confrontation took place between the Jewish man, identified as Paul Kessler, and a counter-protester or group of counter-protesters. Witnesses at the scene revealed that Kessler was involved in a physical altercation, resulting in him falling backward and hitting his head on the ground.

Medical authorities rushed to Kessler’s aid, noting that he had suffered a severe head injury. He was immediately transported to a local hospital for advanced medical treatment. Despite efforts to save his life, Kessler succumbed to his injuries and passed away on Monday, as confirmed by the Ventura County Medical Examiner’s Office.

The authorities have classified Kessler’s death as a homicide, and they are actively investigating the incident. They have not ruled out the possibility that this tragic event may be classified as a hate crime, given Kessler’s Jewish background. Faith-based organizations in Los Angeles have confirmed his Jewish identity.

In response to the news, the Jewish Federation of Los Angeles expressed their devastation and denounced the act of violence against the Jewish community. They demanded safety and pledged to take all necessary measures to prevent such incidents in the future.

Hussam Ayloush, the Executive Director of the Greater LA office of the Council on American-Islamic Relations, also issued a statement expressing deep sadness and calling for restraint. He urged the community not to jump to conclusions, sensationalize the tragedy, or spread rumors that could further escalate tensions. Ayloush emphasized the need to await the completion of the sheriff’s office investigation before drawing any conclusions.

While political debate is supported, CAIR-LA and the Muslim community stand in solidarity with the Jewish community in rejecting all forms of violence, anti-Semitism, Islamophobia, and incitement of hatred, Ayloush added.

This incident has shed light on the need for peaceful dialogue and understanding, especially in times of heightened tensions regarding the Israel-Hamas conflict. The loss of a life highlights the importance of fostering an environment of mutual respect and peaceful coexistence. As the investigation progresses, the authorities will continue to gather evidence and determine the precise circumstances surrounding this tragic altercation.
