The New York Jets’ offensive line struggles continue to plague them, and now they face the added setback of quarterback Aaron Rodgers being sidelined due to injury. Heading into the season, the offensive line was already a concern for the Jets, even with Rodgers in good health. The team’s offensive line currently ranks 18th among all NFL units, according to Pro Football Focus (PFF).

In their first game of the season, the Jets had the second-worst pass-blocking efficiency in the league, as reported by PFF. This indicates that the offensive line is struggling to protect their quarterbacks, leaving them vulnerable to pressure from opposing defenses.

While offensive lines typically need time to gel and develop chemistry, the Jets cannot afford to wait if they want to make a deep playoff run. In Week 1, Mekhi Becton, a former first-round pick, and 38-year-old left tackle Duane Brown allowed seven of the team’s 13 pressures. This level of performance is less than ideal for a team with serious postseason aspirations.

However, the Jets are actively looking for solutions to address their offensive line issues. They are working out various linemen to potentially improve their depth in the short term. One player the Jets have met with is D.J. Fluker, the 11th overall pick in the 2013 NFL Draft.

Fluker, who is 32 years old, has played for four different NFL teams throughout his eight-year career. He even had a one-season stint with the New York Giants, giving him familiarity with MetLife Stadium where the Jets also play their home games. Fluker has started 96 out of the 108 career games he has played, showcasing his experience and durability.

Although Fluker did not play an NFL game in 2021, he appeared in all 16 games the previous season for the Baltimore Ravens, starting at right tackle for eight of those games. He is also capable of playing right guard, providing versatility on the offensive line.

Fluker’s performance in 2020 was below expectations, particularly in pass blocking. PFF graded him with a 63.8 overall player grade, with a notably low 57.5 pass block grade. However, he did receive a slightly above-average run block grade of 67.9.

While the Jets are currently evaluating Fluker and his potential fit with the team, his presence could bring some much-needed experience and depth to the offensive line.

In conclusion, the New York Jets are facing ongoing issues with their offensive line, which have been exacerbated by Aaron Rodgers’ injury. The team’s pass-blocking efficiency ranks among the worst in the league, highlighting the need for immediate improvement. The Jets have recently worked out lineman D.J. Fluker, who could potentially provide a short-term solution. Fluker’s experience and versatility may prove valuable for the team as they aim to fix their offensive line woes and make a deep playoff run.
