Jekyll and Hyde Drug Addict Sentenced to Prison for Abusive Behavior towards Partner
A man described as a Jekyll and Hyde drug addict has been sentenced to prison after subjecting his partner to years of abuse, leaving her feeling like a slave. Adam Winward, 39, was found guilty of controlling and coercive behavior, which included physical and verbal abuse, isolating the woman from her loved ones, and taking control of her communication devices. The terrifying ordeal finally led Winward’s partner to seek help from the authorities.
During the trial at Bradford Crown Court, it was revealed that Winward would lock himself in the bedroom to indulge in drug use while shouting demands at his partner. He even forced her to testify against him in court, extending his manipulative behavior. Judge Andrew Hatton condemned Winward’s actions, stating that they were designed to humiliate and degrade his partner, who frequently feared violence.
Acknowledging the significant psychological harm inflicted on the victim, Judge Hatton sentenced Winward to three years and nine months in prison. The judge noted that although Winward expressed love for his partner at times, he failed to demonstrate it for a substantial portion of their relationship. The woman herself described feeling as though she was Winward’s slave, highlighting the extent of the emotional trauma she endured.
In her defense of Winward, barrister Jayne Beckett attributed his abusive behavior to a prominent change in his personality following a previous prison sentence in 2010. Beckett explained that Winward became paranoid and anxious during his excessive drug use and drinking. However, the court emphasized that Winward was solely responsible for his actions and expressed little sympathy for his fear of returning to jail.
To protect the victim from any further harm, Judge Hatton also imposed a 10-year restraining order on Winward, forbidding him from contacting her or approaching any location where he suspects she may be present.
This case sheds light on the devastating impact of long-term abuse and the psychological harm experienced by victims. It serves as a sobering reminder of the importance of recognizing and addressing coercive and controlling behavior within relationships. By highlighting the seriousness of these crimes, the justice system aims to provide support and protection for those who have suffered at the hands of their partners.
