Save me from the sand mafia, JDS MLA pleads in Karnataka assembly
Janata Dal-Secular MLA Karemma stirred up the Karnataka assembly when she pleaded for protection, claiming that her life was in grave danger due to her relentless efforts to eradicate rampant illegal sand business in her constituency.
Representing the Devadurga constituency, Karemma revealed the alarming state of affairs. In my district, the sand and gambling industries are thriving. However, if these activities are halted, some individuals have threatened to crush me with a truck. Unfortunately, the police department is not providing any assistance, and former members of the legislative assembly are also implicated in this matter. I urge you to protect me, she implored.
During the debate on the vote of appreciation for the Governor’s speech, Karemma exposed the prevalence of illegal activities in her constituency. The unlawful sale of alcohol, gambling, and sand peddling are all rampant, she disclosed. Law enforcement agencies are failing to collaborate in putting an end to these crimes. Moreover, even when the culprits are caught by members of the community and handed over to the police, they are only fined Rs 300 each and released. Holding the position of an MLA has not earned me any respect. I am facing numerous challenges from the supporters of former MLAs, who have been promising new elections in the district for the past six months. I grew concerned when an unidentified individual sat in my assembly seat, she explained.
She further elaborated on the consequences faced by those attempting to combat the sand trade in her district. My nephew, aged 21, was attacked on the road while trying to curb the sand trade. I, myself, have been threatened with a truck running me over. A formal complaint has been filed, but the identities of the arrested individuals remain unknown, she added.
Desperate for help, Karemma explicitly asked Speaker UT Khader to ensure her safety. Even my brother’s child was assaulted due to his efforts against the sand trade, she revealed. I no longer feel safe working in the field.
To alleviate her concerns, the Speaker responded, Don’t worry, we are here to ensure your safety. He promised to inform the Home Minister and provide necessary security.
This distressing plea by MLA Karemma sheds light on the alarming situation surrounding the illegal sand business and other unlawful activities in her constituency. The lack of cooperation from law enforcement agencies, along with the involvement of former MLAs, has further complicated matters.
While Karemma’s concerns are undeniable, it is crucial to consider a balanced view of the topic. The illegal sand trade has long plagued not only Devadurga but many other regions in Karnataka as well.
