After a tumultuous first day of school, Jefferson County Public Schools (JCPS) in Louisville, Kentucky, has decided to cancel classes for the rest of the week. The move comes after numerous bus delays and issues that left many students stranded and parents frustrated.

There should have been much better preparation in knowing that a lot of school times were changed. Isn’t bussing a big part of why they changed times anyways? Really hurt the city, hoping they get it together quick.
Another parent expressed concern for their child who was still on the bus late into the evening, stating, It’s now after 7. My kid called to tell me younger kids (he’s 10) are crying and scared. They’re still on the bus….how is this ok?
The situation has caused widespread frustration and disappointment among the community. JCPS Superintendent Dr. Marty Pollio acknowledged the issues in a video released on Thursday morning, apologizing for the problems families and bus drivers had experienced. He took responsibility for the situation, stating, It is not on bus drivers, it’s not on the school, it’s on me and my team. And we are going to fix this.
Over the next four days, JCPS officials will be reviewing and optimizing bus routes and stops for efficiency. Bus drivers will also be practicing their routes, ensuring they are well-prepared for the upcoming changes. Pollio emphasized that the district will not reopen until they can guarantee the safe transportation of students.
The difficult part, for me, is it was a great day in our schools, I saw some incredible instruction, kids excited families excited new school buildings, and to have it end with the transportation disaster that we had last night was truly unacceptable, Pollio said.
While the cancellation of school for the rest of the week may cause disruption, JCPS is committed to resolving the bus issues and ensuring the safety and well-being of students. Pollio assured parents that they will not allow a repeat of the chaotic situation that occurred on Wednesday.
