Jalaj Saxena, the Kerala all-rounder, has expressed disappointment at not being selected for the South Zone squad for the Duleep Trophy, despite being the highest wicket-taker in the 2023 Ranji Trophy Elite round. Saxena, who took 50 wickets in seven matches at an economy rate of 2.75, posed a query on Twitter, questioning whether the highest wicket-taker in the Ranji Trophy had ever missed selection for the Duleep Trophy in Indian domestic cricket history. He made it clear that he was not looking to apportion blame but was curious about the decision.
Saxena’s exclusion comes as a surprise as he had an excellent Ranji Trophy where he took six five-wicket hauls and two 10-wicket match hauls with best figures of 11/102. He was overlooked by the selection committee in favour of off-spinning all-rounder Washington Sundar, who has represented India in multiple Test matches.
Saxena’s query comes just days after Dinesh Karthik questioned the exclusion of Baba Indrajith from the South Zone squad for the Duleep Trophy.
