Jakarta, the capital city of Indonesia, is taking significant steps to maintain its rabies-free status by intensifying its efforts in vaccinating and sterilizing animals that carry the disease. The Jakarta provincial government has initiated free rabies vaccination services and the sterilization of dogs, cats, monkeys, and ferrets to prevent the spread of rabies. Suharini Eliawati, the head of the Jakarta Food Security, Marine, and Agriculture Service (KPKP) Office, confirmed the vaccination and sterilization programs, emphasizing the importance of targeting all potential carriers of rabies.

To date, at least 20,423 animals in Jakarta have been vaccinated against rabies, including 13,802 cats, 6,408 dogs, 129 monkeys, and 84 ferrets. Additionally, 2,680 cats have undergone sterilization through collaboration with the Indonesian Veterinary Association (PDHI), veterinary clinics, and an animal lovers community. These efforts are crucial because rabies is considered a major zoonotic disease, with the potential to affect public health.

Despite maintaining a rabies-free status since 2004, Jakarta still faces the risk of rabies transmission due to its proximity to regions that have not yet eradicated the disease. The movement of animals carrying rabies across these borders increases the risk for the city. In June 2023 alone, Jakarta reported 1,733 cases of animal bites, which marked a significant increase from the previous month. These cases involved bites from cats, dogs, monkeys, and bats. However, the Jakarta Health Office stated that no positive rabies cases or deaths resulted from these bites.

Reisa Broto Asmoro, a health observer, urged pet owners to remain vigilant and observe any changes in their pets’ behavior patterns. This precautionary measure helps prevent the transmission of rabies to children and residents. Asmoro emphasized the potential danger posed by infected stray animals found in close proximity to residential environments. Aggressive behavior in pets can be an indication of a rabies infection and should not be ignored.

In conclusion, Jakarta is committed to safeguarding its rabies-free status by implementing robust vaccination and sterilization programs. The city’s efforts, in collaboration with professional veterinary associations, clinics, and animal lovers, have resulted in a substantial number of animals being protected against rabies. Despite an increase in reported animal bite cases, Jakarta has managed to contain the spread of the disease effectively. However, it is crucial for pet owners to remain vigilant and be aware of any alarming changes in their pets’ behavior. By prioritizing the health and safety of both residents and animals, Jakarta aims to continue its success in curbing the spread of rabies.
