External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar has stated that India and China need to step back from potential confrontation in the western Himalayas. Speaking at a special briefing on nine years of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s government, Jaishankar said that India does not get swayed by coercion, inducements, or false narratives, and called for both sides to find a way to disengage. He added that India wishes to improve its relationship with China, but not until there is peace and tranquility on the border. Following the clash with Chinese troops in June 2020, Indian Army formations deployed near the Galwan Valley have undertaken a range of activities to stop possible Chinese aggression. Jaishankar further stated that India’s relationship with all major powers, except China, has advanced in recent years. Despite this, he highlighted the progress made by the Neighbourhood First policy but said there were both challenges and progress in the neighbourhood. Referring to the nine years of PM Modi’s government, Jaishankar said that India has expanded its economic and technology base and has tried to find security partners, largely successfully.
