Congress leader Jairam Ramesh has called for better coordination and cooperation in handling man-animal conflict in India. Ramesh shared the story of an elephant-human conflict, which resulted in the elephant being relocated to a tiger reserve in south India. On February 21st, the elephant moved north from the reserve through dense human habitation and crossed the entire Palghat Gap in just two days, reaching close to Mettupalayam. This was an exceptional case, but highlights the need for better coordination and cooperation between the three southern states of Kerala, Tamil Nadu, and Karnataka. Due to shrinking forest land, several states in India have been facing man-animal conflict, leading to loss of life. Ramesh emphasized the importance of ecological landscapes that go beyond state boundaries and called for better methods of managing them.
