Jaipur’s Sawai Man Singh (SMS) Hospital recently celebrated the one-year anniversary of Dholi Devi’s successful heart transplant. Despite facing critical heart complications, Devi became the fifth SMS Hospital patient to receive a heart transplant in January 2022. This event was celebrated last weekend at the SMS Hospital where fellow donors and medical staff were present.
Devi, 43-years-old, who hails from Behror, received the heart of a 36-year-old donor from Maharashtra, who was declared brain dead while being treated at a private hospital in Jaipur. Grateful for the successful heart transplant, Devi spoke to the media and expressed her heartfelt thanks to the hospital’s staff members for their remarkable efforts. Devi’s remarkable journey of survival has touched the hearts of thousands of citizens, doctors and fellow heart transplant recipients alike.
The Head of the Cardiothoracic and Vascular Surgery Department at SMS Hospital, Dr Ram Gopal Yadav, provided extensive care and treatment to Devi when she was initially diagnosed with cardiomyopathy in 2019. Despite several hospitalizations, Devi’s heart was continuously failing until Dr Yadav recommended a transplant.
According to Dr Yadav, Devi’s deteriorating health was evident when she was brought to the hospital with respiratory distress. After conducting diagnostic tests, doctors diagnosed her with cardiomyopathy. She frequently got admitted to the hospital, and we advised her to receive a heart transplant, Dr Yadav stated. Since then, with the heart transplant, Devi has shown remarkable improvement in her health and has become an inspiration to many who face similar challenges.
The celebration organized by the SMS Hospital was a tribute to Devi’s resilience and the successful heart transplant that saved her life. Among the hundreds of donors worldwide, Dholi Devi’s story stands as proof of how a heart transplant can transform lives and offer hope to those who need it the most.
