Title: Jail Officer Fired and Charged for Supplying Inmate with Cellphone

A detention officer from the Guilford County Sheriff’s Office in High Point has been terminated from her position after being accused of providing a cellphone to an inmate. The 50-year-old jailer, Beverly Annette Chavis, allegedly supplied the illegal device to 25-year-old Waleed Ahmad Faydi, an inmate from Greensboro, between June 17 and June 20. The incident has raised concerns about the security measures in place at the jail.

Following a thorough investigation conducted by both criminal and internal administrative experts, Chavis chose to resign from her position, according to Guilford County Sheriff Danny Rogers. As a result, she is no longer employed by the sheriff’s office. The investigation led to felony charges being filed against Chavis for providing a cellphone or electronic device to an inmate.

Waleed Ahmad Faydi, the recipient of the cellphone, has a lengthy criminal record that includes an attempted murder charge from a road rage incident in High Point last year. Faydi’s troublesome behavior came to the forefront once more in June 2022 when he was involved in a confrontation on Kivett Drive in High Point. According to a 47-year-old motorist from Greensboro, Faydi attempted to merge into his lane and nearly hit his vehicle. Faydi proceeded to tailgate the motorist until he pulled off the road.

At this point, Faydi pulled up alongside the motorist’s car, retrieved a gun from near the driver’s seat, and aimed it at the individual while seemingly attempting to fire. Fortunately, the gun malfunctioned, sparing the intended victim from harm. Undeterred, Faydi continued to pursue the motorist down Kivett Drive, eventually turning back near Vickrey Chapel Road amid ongoing construction in unincorporated Guilford County.

With the help of the High Point Police Department, Faydi was later apprehended on Granby Avenue in east High Point. As records indicate, he has been arrested multiple times in High Point since 2017 on various drug charges, possession of stolen goods, speeding to elude arrest, and hit-and-run property damage.

The incident involving Beverly Annette Chavis supplying a cellphone to an inmate highlights the potential vulnerabilities within the jail system. Correctional facilities aim to prevent illegal items from entering the hands of prisoners, but lapses such as this raise concerns about the effectiveness of security protocols and staff adherence to the rules.

It is crucial for the Guilford County Sheriff’s Office to conduct a thorough review of their internal procedures to prevent similar incidents from occurring in the future. Identifying and rectifying any loopholes will enhance the security measures in place and ensure that inmates are not granted access to unauthorized items.

Situations like these also underscore the importance of maintaining the integrity and professionalism of staff within correctional facilities. Detention officers are entrusted with upholding the law and safeguarding the welfare of both inmates and the general public. Any breach of trust like this undermines the public’s confidence in the criminal justice system.

As the case progresses, it will be interesting to see how the judicial system handles the charges against Beverly Annette Chavis. Additionally, efforts must be made to address the underlying issues that contributed to this incident in order to prevent similar occurrences in the future. It is imperative that correctional facilities maintain the highest standards of security and ensure that their staff act in accordance with their professional obligations and the law.
