Italy has become the first Western country to temporarily ban the use of ChatGPT due to concerns over data privacy. The Italian Data Protection Authority announced on Friday that it would block and investigate OpenAI, the US start-up behind ChatGPT, with immediate effect. ChatGPT, an advanced chatbot backed by Microsoft, has gained popularity worldwide, but Italy has taken a firm stance on privacy issues. The Italian watchdog cited several reasons for the ban, including OpenAI’s lack of a legal basis to justify the massive collection and storage of personal data for training the chatbot. It also highlighted the failure to verify the ages of users, potentially exposing children to inappropriate content. Additionally, the data breach suffered by ChatGPT in March further fueled the concerns. OpenAI has taken the chatbot offline to address the issue and has apologized, stating that it will work diligently to rebuild trust. Italy’s move to ban ChatGPT marks the first nation-scale restriction of a mainstream AI platform by a democracy, according to Alp Toker, director of the advocacy group NetBlocks. OpenAI intends to make ChatGPT available again for Italian users, but it will need to comply with the country’s privacy regulations and report on measures taken to protect user data. Failure to do so may result in a significant fine.
