In response to the recent controversy surrounding a morphed video of actor Rashmika Mandanna, which went viral online, the Ministry has issued a crucial advisory to major platforms such as Facebook, Instagram, and YouTube.
The advisory sent by the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) emphasizes the need for social media platforms to promptly remove any fake content that is generated using artificial intelligence (AI) within 24 hours. By reiterating the existing legal provisions that platforms must follow as online intermediaries, MeitY aims to hold them accountable for their role in curbing the dissemination of misleading and harmful content.
Specifically, the advisory refers to the Information Technology Act, 2000, and its associated rules. Violations of these rules can result in severe consequences for platforms, including imprisonment of up to three years and a fine of up to Rs 1 lakh. Rule 3(1)(b)(vii) of the IT Intermediary Rules underscores the importance of due diligence on the part of social media intermediaries.
