Indian cricketer Ishan Kishan has opted out of the upcoming Duleep Trophy to train for the West Indies tour at the National Cricket Academy (NCA), according to reports. The talented wicketkeeper-batsman played a pivotal role in India’s recently concluded tour of Sri Lanka, scoring 139 runs and taking five catches in the three ODIs and three T20Is.
While KL Rahul was absent from the ODI series against New Zealand, Kishan stood in and played in all three games, followed by all three T20Is against the same opposition. Kishan also served as the second-choice wicketkeeper in India’s Border-Gavaskar Trophy squad in February-March before playing a solitary ODI against Australia.
Following the completion of India’s international commitments, Kishan participated in all 16 matches for Mumbai Indians in IPL 2023, from the league stage to Qualifier 2. After Rahul was ruled out of the recent World Test Championship Final due to a right thigh injury that required surgery, Kishan was named as his replacement in India’s squad. Once IPL 2023 finished, Kishan flew to London to join the team.
Due to concerns regarding the workload on a lengthy tour, Kishan has opted to skip the Duleep Trophy, which is scheduled to start on August 22 in Bilaspur. He will now spend his time at the NCA, where he will work on his skills and fitness in preparation for the West Indies tour, which begins on August 27. The Indian squad for the tour will be announced soon.
