The chairman of the Irish Muslim Council, Shaykh Dr Umar Al-Qadri, was reportedly subject to a deliberate hate crime attack in Tallaght, according to his recent social media posts. The incident, which occurred on Thursday evening, is currently being investigated by Gardai as both a robbery and assault.

Dr Al-Qadri explained that he had agreed to meet two individuals in Tallaght, but the situation quickly turned violent. The next thing I remember is feeling disoriented in my car, surrounded by helpful Irish neighbors of the area I was visiting, as the Gardai and ambulance arrived, he stated. The senior cleric was transported to the hospital, where he underwent a CT scan.

Fortunately, the CT scan revealed no serious injuries. However, Dr Al-Qadri is currently experiencing extreme swelling on the left side of his face and damage to his front teeth. The pain has made it difficult for him to speak and eat. He expressed gratitude to the individuals who assisted him during and after the incident and thanked everyone who has sent well wishes.

Dr Al-Qadri also clarified that the attack was not motivated by robbery. It was a pre-planned attack intended to cause harm. My mobile phone, car, and watch were not taken, he emphasized. The Gardai are continuing their investigations into the incident and have confirmed that one man required medical attention as a result of the assault.

In his social media posts, Dr Al-Qadri also shared his enduring appreciation for Ireland and its people, despite the incident. Having resided in the country for over two decades, he stated, This incident doesn’t change the fact that I deeply appreciate and cherish Ireland and its people.

As authorities delve further into the investigation, the motive behind the targeted attack remains unclear. However, the incident underscores the need for continued efforts to combat hate crimes and promote tolerance in society.

It is of utmost importance to address incidents of this nature and ensure that all individuals, regardless of their faith or background, feel safe and protected within their communities. The fact that such an attack can occur against a senior religious figure highlights the ongoing challenges faced by minority groups.

The incident involving Dr Al-Qadri serves as a reminder for societies to unite against hate and discrimination, fostering an environment of inclusion and respect.
