Ireland Star Tadhg Furlong Pays Emotional Tribute at Father’s Funeral Mass
Ireland rugby star Tadhg Furlong delivered a heartfelt tribute to his father James during his funeral mass in Wexford earlier today. James Furlong, who had a deep love for sport and his family, passed away on Tuesday night at St Vincent’s Dublin hospital after an illness. To me, my father was a larger-than-life character.

He expressed gratitude for the support and guidance his father provided and recalled his humorous antics, always finding unconventional ways to get things done and offering secret stashes of training kits.
Acknowledging his father’s love for socializing, Tadhg spoke of his infectious laughter and lively presence. James was known for lighting up a room and could engage with anyone. Tadhg playfully described his father’s quick wit and sharp comments, admitting that he had yet to grasp the concept of political correctness but managed to get away with it every time.
The passing of James leaves a significant void in the lives of his family members, as Tadhg explained, He’s intertwined into all our hearts and all of our minds and the very being of the people he leaves behind. To honor their father’s memory, Tadhg’s brother Eoin recited a touching poem, reflecting on the overwhelming support the family has received since their father’s passing.
Before the funeral service, Campile residents gathered to pay their respects as James’s remains were brought through the village, where he once ran Furlong’s butcher shop. Members of the New Ross Rugby Club stood as guards of honor as Tadhg and Eoin accompanied their father’s casket into the church, their sense of loss palpable.
The Furlong family has been astounded by the outpouring of support they have received from all corners of Ireland and beyond since their father’s passing. Even in the face of his diagnosis with cancer a year ago, James was determined to overcome his illness, supported by the medical staff at St Vincent’s Dublin hospital.
Tadhg and Eoin were met with a prolonged ovation from mourners after speaking at the funeral. The emotional ceremony concluded, leaving family, friends, and fans alike with a profound sense of loss but also a tribute to a life well-lived and a legacy that will endure.
