Iranian Security Forces Crack Down on Protests in Kurdish Areas, Detain Father of Mahsa Amini

Iranian security forces have launched a crackdown on protests in Kurdish areas of the country, leading to the brief detention of the father of Mahsa Amini. This comes a year after the death of Mahsa Amini, which sparked widespread political unrest. The Revolutionary Guards arrested a dual national suspected of organizing unrest and sabotage. Several other counter revolutionaries and terrorists were also reportedly arrested.

Despite heavy security presence, there have been reports of sporadic confrontations in various parts of the country. Social media videos showed people gathering in Tehran, where a young protesting couple received support from onlookers. In another incident, the women’s ward at Qarchak prison in Tehran province caught fire after convicts awaiting execution set fire to their clothes. Fortunately, there were no casualties.

The Kurdistan Human Rights Network reported that special forces beat up women and fired pellet bullets in the women’s ward, indicating a connection to the ongoing protests. In Mahabad, security forces opened fire, injuring at least one person. There were also reports of injuries in Kermanshah, although no official confirmation has been given.

In Amini’s hometown of Saqqez, police reportedly seriously injured a man who ignored their warning. The man underwent an operation and is currently in intensive care. Demonstrations have been reported in various cities, with chants against Supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and calls for change in Iran.

Mahsa Amini’s father, Amjad Amini, was temporarily detained on the anniversary of his daughter’s death and warned against commemorating the occasion. However, supporters in Washington held a protest outside the White House, demanding justice for Mahsa Amini and calling for human rights in Iran.

The death of Mahsa Amini in police custody last year led to more than 500 deaths, numerous injuries, and thousands of arrests during the ensuing protests. The international community has condemned the violent suppression of these demonstrations. In response, Britain has imposed sanctions on four Iranian officials, while the United States has sanctioned over two dozen individuals and entities involved in the suppression of protests.

Despite reports of disturbances and strikes in Iranian Kurdistan, state media claims that the region remains calm due to the presence of security and military forces. However, human rights organizations have accused Iranian authorities of arbitrary arrests and detention of victims’ families, as well as imposing restrictions on peaceful gatherings at grave sites.

As the situation unfolds, it is evident that the protests following Mahsa Amini’s death continue to provoke unrest and demand for change in Iran. The crackdown by security forces raises concerns about the country’s human rights situation and the suppression of fundamental freedoms. The international community continues to monitor the situation and call for accountability.
