IPS HEART’s GIVI-MPC Stem Cell Therapy Shows Promise in Regenerating Skeletal Muscle and Treating Sarcopenia & Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy in Aged Mice

A groundbreaking study published in the journal Cells has demonstrated the potential of IPS HEART’s GIVI-MPC stem cell therapy in regenerating skeletal muscle and treating age-related conditions such as sarcopenia and Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy (DMD) in mice. The study showcased how the therapy successfully differentiated and created new human skeletal muscle in 18-month-old mice, which is considered extremely aged for mice.

Sarcopenia, characterized by muscle mass loss and function decline with age, poses a significant threat to the elderly population’s overall well-being and quality of life. With weaker muscles being more susceptible to damage and injury, finding effective treatments for muscle loss during aging is crucial. Current research indicates that muscle mass decreases by 3 to 8 percent per decade after the age of 30, making it a pressing concern for public health.

Dr. Rauf Ashraf, CEO of IPS HEART, explained that aging muscle tissues experience increased inflammation and oxidative damage. GIVI-MPCs, the stem cells used in this therapy, possess anti-oxidative and anti-inflammatory properties, along with superior migration characteristics. Upon administration in 18-month-old mice, the GIVI-MPCs significantly improved muscle regeneration, resulting in a doubling of hindlimb grip strength and a reduction in fibrosis by over 30%. These results are incredibly promising and have now been published in a peer-reviewed journal for the second time.

Earlier studies conducted by IPS HEART had already shown that GIVI-MPCs could develop into new human skeletal muscle and reduce fibrosis and necrosis in dystrophic mice and pigs. In the newly published study, successful delivery of GIVI-MPCs via IV/systemic delivery and direct injection resulted in the development of new skeletal muscle, complete with full-length human dystrophin, in 16-month-old dystrophic mice. This discovery suggests that the therapy may not only slow the rate of decline, as gene therapy approaches aim to do, but also potentially reverse Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy in both young and older patients.
