Iowa Elementary School in Nampa, Idaho, is taking a unique approach to boost reading skills among its students. The school recently introduced a book vending machine, becoming one of the first in the district to have such a facility. Principal Preston Pruett believes that this initiative will help enhance the reading abilities of students.

Each year, the school’s student ambassador program undertakes a project to support the school community. This year, they decided to focus on the book vending machine. The students raised funds amounting to nearly $7,700 to purchase and install the machine. Jennifer Owen-Tillotson, the Family Community Resource Coordinator of Iowa Elementary School, highlighted the various fundraising activities the students engaged in, including selling beef sticks, organizing Panda Express and pizza fundraisers, as well as selling chocolate. With a slight shortfall in funds, the students sought assistance from the PTA to complete the purchase.

Principal Pruett commended the students for their hard work and dedication in making the book vending machine a reality. He acknowledged that their efforts would benefit many generations of students in the coming years.

To access books from the vending machine, students will be provided with tokens by their teachers. These tokens will be awarded weekly to the most deserving students nominated by their teachers themselves. Starting from the first day of school on August 17, the vending machine will be stationed in the front hall of the school.

By incorporating a book vending machine, Iowa Elementary School aims to foster a culture of reading and make books more accessible to students. The initiative not only encourages reading but also provides an opportunity for children to take charge of their own learning.

In conclusion, Iowa Elementary School in Nampa, Idaho, has taken a significant step towards boosting reading skills by introducing a book vending machine. With the students actively involved in fundraising efforts, the school has successfully acquired the machine. This innovative initiative ensures that books are readily available to students, ultimately fostering a love for reading and enhancing their academic journey for years to come.
