The International Olympic Committee (IOC) has condemned the alleged manhandling of protesting wrestlers by Delhi Police, calling it disturbing and urging authorities to protect the wellbeing of the athletes during the ongoing investigation against Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh, the sidelined chief of the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI). The IOC statement follows similar comments by United World Wrestling, which urged the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) to protect the wrestlers. Olympians Bajrang Punia, Sakshi Malik and Vinesh Phogat have been protesting since 23 April, demanding Singh’s arrest over sexual harassment allegations involving female athletes, including a minor. Last weekend, the protestors were detained by Delhi Police, leading to a scuffle. In a statement, IOC confirmed its support for UWW, the global governing body, in addressing the issue.
