Investment in Bengal Power Sector Reaches Rs 27,000cr in 11 Years, Reveals Minister

Since 2011, the West Bengal government has invested INR 27,000 crore ($3.7 billion) in the power sector to increase capacity for generation, transmission, and distribution, according to state Power Minister Arup Biswas. The government will invest more in the coming years to increase total power capacity, including thermal, solar and hydel capacities, from the current 9,521 MW to 13,689 MW. Biswas said that power cuts in the state were due to storm damage to distribution networks and unauthorised use of electricity by some retail customers, but there was sufficient power to meet demand.
