Intense Workout Could Slow Down Course of Parkinson’s Disease

In a groundbreaking study published in the journal Science Advances, neuroscientists from the Faculty of Medicine of the Catholic University, Rome, have discovered that intense exercise may have a beneficial effect on the symptoms of Parkinson’s disease. The study suggests that this non-drug approach could potentially slow down the progression of the disease.

The research team, in collaboration with other institutions, conducted experiments to investigate the impact of exercise on motor and cognitive symptoms in Parkinson’s disease. They found that intensive physical activity can trigger the production of a critical growth factor called brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF), which plays a vital role in supporting neuron function and promoting the growth of new synapses in the brain.

By using a multidisciplinary approach, the researchers measured improvements in neuronal survival, brain plasticity, motor control, and visuospatial cognition. The primary observation was a reduction in the spread of pathological alpha-synuclein aggregates, which are responsible for the gradual dysfunction of neurons in key areas of the brain that control movement.

The neuroprotective effect of exercise is linked to the survival of dopamine-releasing neurons and their ability to express dopamine-dependent plasticity. This process helps preserve motor control and visuospatial learning, which are often impaired by Parkinson’s disease.

Professor Paolo Calabresi, a Neurology expert from the Catholic University, expressed his enthusiasm regarding the study’s findings. He described the never-before-seen mechanism by which exercise performed in the early stages of Parkinson’s disease can induce lasting beneficial effects on movement control, even after the training is stopped. According to him, this discovery could pave the way for the development of new non-drug therapeutic targets and markers to monitor disease progression.

Building upon these breakthrough results, the research team is currently involved in a clinical trial aimed at testing the efficacy of intensive exercise in early-stage patients. The trial aims to evaluate whether exercise can serve as a marker to track the slowing of disease progression and determine the unique profile of Parkinson’s disease progression.

It is important to note that while this study presents a promising avenue for non-drug treatments, it does not suggest exercise as a standalone replacement for current drug therapies. However, it opens doors for potential complementary approaches that could enhance the effectiveness of existing treatments.

This study’s findings have the potential to significantly impact the lives of individuals living with Parkinson’s disease, providing new hope for their overall well-being. By integrating regular and intensive exercise into treatment plans, patients may experience improved motor control and cognitive function.
