Spiros Filidis, 46, was allegedly stabbed to death by a 27-year-old man who has since been charged with his murder. Despite the efforts of paramedics to save him, Filidis succumbed to his injuries at the scene.
Filidis, who had bravely battled cancer twice, was known for his gentle nature, according to his godmother, Christine Kounelis. Devastated by the shocking turn of events, Kounelis expressed disbelief and refused to accept the reality of the situation. She described Filidis as a happy and independent person, despite his disability. Kounelis also lamented the fact that he was defenseless and alone at the time of the attack.
He wouldn’t fight back. He wouldn’t have known how to, Kounelis told 7 News. I still don’t believe it. I still don’t want to believe it.
While the heartbreak of Filidis’ alleged murder will take a long time to heal, Kounelis is determined to keep his memory alive. She vowed that there will always be a chair reserved for him at their gatherings, emphasizing his presence and the impact he had on their lives.
The alleged perpetrator, a 27-year-old Moorabbin man, was already in police custody on unrelated charges when he was charged with Filidis’ murder on Thursday. He is scheduled to appear in the Melbourne Magistrates’ Court on Friday.
Victoria Police have stated that the attack appears to be random, and there is no evidence suggesting a prior connection between the victim and the assailant.
