Influx of Hoodlums Threatens Security in National Assembly, Says Senate President

The President of the Senate, Godswill Obot Akpabio, expressed concern over the increasing presence of hoodlums in the National Assembly complex. He highlighted that lawmakers and staff now feel threatened due to the influx of these individuals who loiter around the Senate and Reps wings without any legitimate purpose. Akpabio made these remarks while hosting members of the National Assembly Service Commission during a courtesy call at the NASS complex in Abuja.

During the meeting, the Chairman of the NASC, Ahmed Kadi Amshi, presented the challenges faced by the Commission and other issues to the Senate President. In response, Akpabio acknowledged the significant resources allocated for staff welfare but emphasized that it is not solely about their comfort. He addressed the infrastructural decay, untidy environment, and prevailing insecurity within the complex. Akpabio lamented that lawmakers have even lost their phones and other valuables to these hoodlums who strategically position themselves near offices and important areas.

The entire complex is under renovation. We must also take care of the environment. It’s not just about the staff; we want to see a cleaner environment and a secure complex, Akpabio stated. He further stressed that the National Assembly symbolizes democracy, and the 10th Senate aims to make history through exceptional legislation.

Congratulating the Senate President and the Deputy Senate President, Amshi, in his earlier remarks, highlighted their experience as public officers. He also requested lawmakers to provide the list of their legislative aides for documentation purposes, with the goal of completing the task by September.

This development raises concerns about the security and overall ambiance of the National Assembly complex. The presence of hoodlums and their disruptive activities, coupled with the deteriorating infrastructure, are valid worries for the Senate President. The high-profile nature of the National Assembly calls for swift and decisive action to ensure the safety and productivity of lawmakers and staff within the complex.
