Devi Ahilya Vishwavidyalaya (DAVV) in Indore, Madhya Pradesh has issued a 10-point student code that prohibits protests on campuses without prior permission. This follows a letter by the department of higher education (DHE) which called for a blanket ban on demonstrations, rallies, and slogan-chanting at educational institutions. The DAVV’s executive council has overturned the ban, allowing such activities provided that permission is obtained beforehand. Point seven of the student code reads: Before organising demonstrations, programmes etc in educational institutions, the permission of the head of the institution/competent authority is necessary. The code also prohibits any disrespectful remarks towards teachers and employees of the institution. The DAVV has urged officials, department heads, and principals of affiliated colleges to ensure that the code is implemented on their premises. The university has also warned of legal action against any person who disturbs the teaching work or the peace on the campus.
