Major corporate hospitals in Indore, Madhya Pradesh, have been warned that failure to report cases of brain stem cell death (BSD) – a precursor to organ donation – could lead to the loss of transplant permission. During a meeting with transplant coordinators from private hospitals, the appropriate authority for organ and tissue transplants, MGM Medical College, warned that non-reporting was affecting donation levels. Many major hospitals were not sending BSD case reports to Dr Sanjay Dixit, the Dean of MGM; Medanta hospital had sent no report in the last four years. Transplant coordinators were shown how to report BSD cases, provide required information and practice counselling potential donors and their families. The authority has also mapped 51 hospitals in the city for organ donation mentoring, so that staff at smaller facilities can report BSD cases to trained staff at larger hospitals. If BSD is confirmed, patients can be transferred to one of 10 larger hospitals for retrieval and transplant.
