Indore Triumphs Again: Secures Swachhata Crown For The 7th Consecutive Time Across India

Indore, the city of cleanliness, has once again secured the top spot in Swachhata (cleanliness) across India for the seventh year in a row. Despite sharing the cleanest city title with Surat, Indore’s unwavering commitment to maintaining cleanliness has ensured its continued dominance in the field. The city’s public representatives, hundreds of officials, and approximately 8,500 sanitation workers work tirelessly day and night to not only uphold cleanliness but also set new benchmarks in this regard.

With a population of around 33 lakh, the people of Indore play a vital role in preserving the city’s cleanliness. Their collective determination to keep their surroundings clean inspires the Indore Municipal Corporation (IMC) to undertake innovative initiatives that other cities in India may not even consider. IMC’s relentless efforts have brought remarkable success in maintaining its position as the cleanest city in the Swachh Survekshan rankings.

The journey towards cleanliness for Indore began with addressing the issue of municipal waste. Before 2016, this was a significant concern for the city. IMC decided to tackle it head-on by launching a massive campaign to transform Indore into a garbage-free city. As part of this initiative, garbage containers were eliminated, and door-to-door waste collection was introduced.

In 2017, door-to-door garbage collection played a crucial role in securing the cleanest city tag for Indore for the first time. Building on this success, the city took another stride forward in 2018 by implementing the segregation of wet and dry waste at the source. This innovative step helped Indore retain its position as the cleanest city.

2019 witnessed a groundbreaking achievement by IMC as they successfully eliminated 13 lakh metric tonnes of legacy waste from the trenching ground within six months. This remarkable feat astounded the entire country and propelled Indore to achieve a hat-trick of cleanest city titles.

In 2020, Indore continued its impressive streak by becoming the first city in India to ban single-use plastic. Additionally, the city installed large machines at the trenching ground to segregate 15 different types of waste. These measures contributed to Indore securing the cleanest city tag for the fourth consecutive year.

The year 2021 saw Indore’s persistent efforts to ensure the purity of its rivers. Through the implementation of nullah tapping, the city prevented sewerage water from flowing into the Kanh and Saraswati rivers. Furthermore, Indore created six zero waste generating wards, further solidifying its position as a national leader in cleanliness.

In 2022, Indore made significant strides toward environmental sustainability. The city built Asia’s largest bio-CNG plant at the trenching ground and banned the use of coal and wood furnaces in restaurants and factories to improve air quality.

This year, in 2023, Indore took further substantial steps in waste management. The city doubled its capacity to dispose of construction and demolition waste, established 3R (Reduce, Reuse, Recycle) centers in all 19 zones, and increased its ability to produce manure from silt. Moreover, Indore showed its commitment to promoting clean transportation by setting up charging points for e-cars and e-rickshaws.

Indore’s remarkable achievements in cleanliness are a true testament to its unwavering dedication and tireless efforts. The city’s motto of Keep your city clean and never dirty resonates with its population and inspires them to actively participate in maintaining cleanliness. Indore’s innovative initiatives and groundbreaking solutions have set new benchmarks in cleanliness that other cities strive to achieve.

With each passing year, Indore’s continuous dominance as the cleanest city in India serves as a shining example and a source of inspiration for the rest of the nation. The city’s commitment to the Swachhata cause is an embodiment of the vision for a clean and sustainable India.
