Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw has assured residents in Kolkata’s Bowbazar area that their concerns are being taken into account after three instances of subsidence and damage to houses in four years due to tunnelling work for the construction of a Metro line. Vaishnaw inspected the Howrah Maidan to Esplanade stretch of Kolkata’s East-West Metro, set to open to the public by year-end. He inspected the Howrah Metro station, which has been built 33 metres below the surface and has four underground levels. He also inspected an underwater tunnel built 16 metres below the river Hooghly, describing it as an engineering marvel. The corridor will increase connectivity between the twin cities of Howrah and Kolkata and carry 6.7 lakh passengers per day.
