On June 26, the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking was observed worldwide. In his video statement, Union Home Minister Amit Shah extended his greetings to all the anti-narcotics warriors who have fought bravely against the menace of drugs. Shah praised India for dealing the mightiest blow to the narcotics trade and applauded the Narcotics Bureau and other organizations for their relentless efforts in the crackdowns against the evil.

Over the years, the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) has revamped its entire strategy to fulfill Prime Minister Modi’s vision of a drug-free India. India’s top-to-bottom approach to investigation has led to the massive crackdowns on drug trafficking. The aim of this year’s campaign is to raise awareness about treating people who use drugs with respect and empathy. It calls for providing evidence-based, voluntary services for all, offering alternatives to punishment, prioritizing prevention, and leading with compassion.

The day is also significant in promoting non-judgmental language and attitudes towards drug users and combating the stigma and discrimination that surrounds them. The campaign emphasizes the importance of treating people who use drugs with dignity, respect, and non-judgmental care, especially in times of the COVID-19 pandemic.

As India marks this crucial day, reports have emerged of a global drug survey conducted during the pandemic. The survey reveals that people have shifted towards using more psychedelic drugs, such as LSD and magic mushrooms, amidst the pandemic’s uncertainties. The survey highlights a significant increase in the use of psychedelic drugs compared to the previous year.

Meanwhile, the Indian government has taken strict legal action against drug abuse and trafficking, as it continues to fight against this global menace. India’s concerted efforts against the drug trade have been lauded by the international community, and the country continues to battle against the drug menace with new strategies and efforts.
