India’s monsoon season, which delivers 70% of the rain needed for agriculture, has been delayed by another two to three days. Meteorological officials note that the formation of cyclonic circulation in the Arabian Sea has reduced cloud cover over the coast of Kerala. The state-run India Meteorological Department had expected the monsoon to arrive on 4 June, however, the latest arrival in four years is now anticipated to be in the coming days. The monsoon’s late start raises concerns that the planting of crops such as rice, cotton, corn, soybean, and sugar cane could also be delayed. Despite an El Niño weather phenomenon, the IMD predicts average rainfall for the forthcoming three-month season.
