India’s Environment Minister, Bhupender Yadav, announced on Thursday that so far, there are no plans to relocate cheetahs from the Kuno National Park in Madhya Pradesh despite the death of six cheetahs in the last few months. Yadav assured reporters that the park has enough prey for the cheetahs, and they are adjusting to their new environment. The minister mentioned the Gandhi Sagar wildlife sanctuary as an alternative site but emphasized that there are no plans to shift the cheetahs for now. Prime Minister Narendra Modi released the first batch of eight spotted felines from Namibia into a quarantine enclosure at Kuno last September. The second translocation involved 12 cheetahs from South Africa and was released in February. After widespread interest due to the recent deaths, the government set up an 11-member high-level steering committee to review the Cheetah reintroduction program’s progress.
