Indian Space Startup Pixxel has secured a multi-crore rupee grant from the government to develop miniaturized multi-payload satellites for the Indian Air Force. This marks Pixxel’s entry into the defense sector. The grant, provided by the Innovations for Defense Excellence (iDEX) initiative of the Defense Ministry, will support Pixxel in building small satellites weighing up to 150 kgs for various purposes such as electro-optical, infrared, synthetic aperture radar, and hyperspectral imaging.
Pixxel, based in Bengaluru, has previously launched commercial hyperspectral imaging satellites that offer earth-imaging services to customers, including the US’ National Reconnaissance Office. This new grant from iDEX recognizes Pixxel’s dedication to pushing the boundaries of space exploration and innovation.
Awais Ahmed, CEO of Pixxel, expressed his delight at receiving the iDEX grant and the opportunity to manufacture satellites externally for the first time. He stated that this collaboration with the Indian government marks an exciting phase for Pixxel and demonstrates the power of partnerships in advancing satellite technology.
Under the SPARK initiative of Mission DefSpace, which was launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi last year, the grant aims to address 75 Defense Space challenges across five categories: launch system, satellite system, communication and payload system, ground system, and software system. This holistic approach provides a comprehensive overview of space technology.
The Chief Operating Officer of iDEX-DIO, Vivek Virmani, commended the progress of private entities in the Indian space industry and emphasized the importance of partnerships in advancing satellite technology for the country. He highlighted that the grant is intended to support the development of technologies encompassing all stages of a space mission, from planning to manufacturing and satellite data analytics.
The SPARK grants, offered to startups selected through the iDEX and DISC initiatives, aim to foster technological innovation and promote deep-tech solutions from Indian innovators and entrepreneurs. Mission DefSpace’s objective is to encourage the development of space technology for defense applications by startups and young entrepreneurs through various Defense Ministry initiatives, including iDEX.
Pixxel’s entry into the defense sector exemplifies the growing capabilities of startups in the Indian space industry. With the government’s support, Pixxel will further its advancements in satellite manufacturing and contribute to the nation’s defense capabilities in space. This development is a testament to India’s commitment to technological progress and innovation in the defense sector.
