Indian Prime Minister, Narendra Modi, made an unexpected visit to the site of a train crash that killed more than 280 people and injured over 1,100 in eastern Odisha state. The accident involved two passenger trains and a freight train. Modi decided to cancel the inauguration of a high-speed train to attend the state of emergency that arose from the disaster. The prime minister announced a “high-level inquiry” to determine the cause of the accident, which is thought to be a traffic signaling failure. India’s extensive rail network carries more than 13 million passengers daily and was built 160 years ago. Despite recent government investment to upgrade the system, lack of maintenance and aging infrastructure still pose a significant threat to users. Last year, nearly 18,000 railway accidents were registered, killing more than 16,000 people. The latest crash in Bubaneswar was one of the worst rail disasters in India’s recent history.
