Indian Government Remains Strongly Committed to Act East Policy: Sarbananda Sonowal

Union Shipping Minister Sarbananda Sonowal assured the government’s continued commitment to the Act East Policy, which aims to promote economic cooperation and cultural ties while strategically engaging with countries in the Asia-Pacific region. At a stakeholder meeting of Syama Prasad Mookerjee Port, Sonowal highlighted the need for greater cooperation among Bay of Bengal Initiative for Multilateralism (BBINM) countries. Representatives from Bangladesh, Bhutan, Myanmar, and Nepal, as well as members of various industries such as SAIL, Tata Steel, Indian Oil, Haldia Petrochemicals Ltd, BPCL, Jindal Steel, and MAERSK Shipping Lines, attended the meeting. Kolkata Port or SMP Kolkata chairman Rathendra Raman announced the government’s plans to enhance trade ties with Bangladesh by facilitating the movement of goods between SMP Kolkata and various ports in Bangladesh through the Inland Waterways Authority of India (IWAI). The government also intends to collaborate with Myanmar’s Sittwe Port through the Kaladan Multi-Modal Transport Project (KMMTTP), which would transport cargo to Northeast India via Mizoram.
